about Augustus GoertzAUGUSTUS GOERTZ

Augustus Goertz (1948) was born and raised together with two sisters in an artistic/bohemian household by artist parents, Esther Meyer Goertz, and August Goertz (Artist Name: Augustus Goertz), in Greenwich Village, New York City. He received his education at LaGuardia High School in NYC, Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA (Acting), and earned his BFA in Viusal Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA, where he studied with Bruce Nauman, Jay Defeo and Wally Hedrick. 

He also performed as a Musician in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, notably as percussionist with Todd Capp & The Improvising Orchestra and, as the singer/songwriter and percussionist for the New York based experimental band NONE Of THE ABOVE (NOTA).

He has recorded with both: As percussionist with Todd Capp’s The Improvising Orchestra, Volume 1: Quintessence, Lucky Tiger Records, Recorded live at the BragrTimes/Tanglewood Gallery Downtown, NYC, November 27, 1978, Released 1999. As singer/songwriter and percussionist with NONE OF THE ABOVE, Single “Feel like a Dog” and “Not Tonight” produced by Giorgio Gomelsky (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), 45rpm, ZANON Records, 1983

Since the 1970’s, he has lived in downtown Manhattan, first in SoHo and later in TriBeCa. During the 1970’s, as a visual artist, he exhibited with drummer and fellow band member Todd Capp, at Todd Capp Gallery in the East Village, and joined Sarah Rentschler Gallery whose combined rosters included (at that time emerging), later established artists such as John Ahearn, Joe Coleman, John Rose, Stanley Boxer, Ronny Landfield, Tony Fitzpatrick, Peter Reginato, and Billy Sullivan. 

After the closing of Sarah Rentschler Gallery with its three branches in New York City (SoHo), Bridgehampton, and Watermill, Long Island, New York in the early 90’s, he had exhibitions at Patricia Correia Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Rene Fotouhi Gallery; South Hampton, Long Island, New York; Robin Rice Gallery, New York City; a.o. In the mid 1990’s, he joined Kim Foster gallery; originally founded in SoHo, later in the Chelsea district of New York City, where his work has been shown in many solo and group exhibitions, until recently. Since the early 2000’s, Augustus Goertz has exhibited at numerous venues internationally, many of them located in Germany, Austria, and South Korea.

He joined the project space Lichtundfire on the LES in New York City, and has shown there from 2015 – 2017 while he continues to exhibit nationally and internationally.
